About QR Codes

What are QR Codes?

QR Codes stand for 'Quick Response'

In 1994, engineers working for Denso Wave aimed to create an improved barcode system. As products were getting smaller, there was additionally a need to create a code that could be printed in a smaller area and scanned quickly. ‘QR Codes’ were developed at Denso Wave to meet these needs.

Compared to traditional bar codes, ‘QR Codes’ were developed with the ability to be coded in two dimensions. In the case of barcodes, information can be coded only in the transverse direction (one dimension). In the case of 2D codes, information can be coded in both the transverse and longitudinal directions (two dimensions).

In developing QR codes, there were a few different engineering challenges that needed to be solved including making the codes fast to read and preventing false recognition. After solving these challenges, the resulting ‘QR  Code’ can store a large quantity of information and at the same time can be read at more than 10 times the speed of other codes.

Dynamic QR Codes

Dynamic QR Codes offer a number of advantages related to enhanced tracking and greater flexibility. If a URL is being encoded, dynamic QR codes can be changed after the time of publishing.Related to enhanced tracking for dynamic QR codes, it becomes possible to understand the number of scans, scan locations, and scan dates. Further, it becomes possible to track marketing efforts, such as billboards or signage, and to better understand the engagement with these marketing investments.Since dynamic QR codes can be updated after publishing, it becomes possible to change the data provided. As an example, a store could update product information being scanned or signage could lead to an updated web page.

Static QR Codes

After Static QR Codes are created and published, they cannot be changed. In cases where the data is fixed or when tracking is unnecessary, Static QR Codes are sufficient. When there’s a need for updating data after the time of publishing, such as a different destination URL, then a dynamic QR code offers greater flexibility. For enhanced tracking, dynamic QR codes offer much greater flexibility.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about using QR Codes
Can I make changes to my QR code?
You can edit attributes related to your QR Code and then generate a QR code which you can download.
Can I download my QR code?
Yes, after you create your QR code, you’ll be able to download it in various file formats.
Do you need an app to scan QR Codes?
QR Code scanning is a native feature provided in iPhones and iPads (iOS 11 and higher) and Android smartphones (Android 8 and higher). The QR Code scanner can be accessed from the camera app. There is no additional app required.
Can I check if my QR Code is working properly?
Yes. Prior to download, we recommend that you scan the QR code preview with your mobile device to check that it's working.
Can a static code be converted to a dynamic one or vice versa?
No, due to the technical differences between each of the codes, a static code cannot be upgraded to a dynamic code or vice versa. After creation and publishing, dynamic codes are more flexible and can get updated to point to different content.
